Wekwastukl, meaning “lights that move across the sky” in Mi’kmaw. A 24" x 24" birch wall piece, 1.5" deep—hand-burned (pyrography), painted with acrylics, and finished with natural oils.
The linework throughout this piece is inspired by traditional Mi’kmaq quillwork, honouring the rhythm, symmetry, and storytelling carried through those designs. It reflects the beauty and wonder of our world: super full moons, northern lights, and the sky’s shifting glow.
Created in 2024 but never released, this piece has lived in my studio for some time. I’m finally ready to share it.
Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island) is part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. The Mi’kmaq have lived on and cared for this land for over 12,000 years. We honour the Treaties of Peace and Friendship, which recognize Mi’kmaq rights and remind us that our relationship with this land and each other is ongoing. We are all Treaty People.
